What to Wear for your Fall Photoshoot: Top 5 Tips
Fall is the most popular time to capture family photos! Nature usually gives us a gorgeous backdrop to work with, but what you wear for your session, really does impact your photos too. So here are my top 5 tips to help you select the best outfits for your fall family photoshoot and get that Holiday card winner.
1.) Embrace the Rich, Warm Colors
Think deep reds, burnt oranges, mustard yellows, and earthy browns. These shades not only complement the natural beauty of fall, but also create a harmonious look in photos. You can mix and match these colors for a coordinated yet dynamic appearance. For a timeless look, consider incorporating neutrals like cream, beige, and gray to balance out the vibrant hues. Avoid overly bright colors or neon shades that can clash with the fall scenery and be distracting in photos.
2.) Layer Up for Texture and Warmth
Layers are both practical and stylish for a fall photoshoot. They add depth and texture to your outfits, which translates beautifully on camera. Think cozy sweaters, cardigans, jean jackets, and vests. These layers not only keep everyone warm but also offer flexibility if the weather changes. Plus, layering allows for easy outfit adjustments if someone feels too warm or too cold.
Tip: Coordinate your layers so they complement rather than compete. For example, if one person is wearing a patterned sweater, keep other layers more neutral to avoid visual clutter.
3.) Choose Coordinated, Not Matching Outfits
Gone are the days of everyone wearing matching outfits. Instead, focus on coordinating colors and styles. Choose a color palette and then pick outfits that fit within that scheme. This approach creates a cohesive look without being too uniform. Patterns can add interest, but keep them minimal and balanced—one or two people in patterns is usually enough.
Tip: Lay out the outfits before the shoot to ensure they work well together and make any necessary adjustments.
4.) Consider the Location and Setting
The location of your photoshoot can significantly impact your outfit choices. If we’re shooting in a park with a lot of greenery still, avoid blending in too much with green clothing. If we get the coveted colorful leaf scenary, opt for outfits that stand out against the backdrop. Also, think about the ground—if it's muddy or grassy, choose shoes that are practical and easy to clean.
5.) Find a Balance Between Dressy and Comfort
While you want to look great, comfort should be a priority too! If everyone is uncomfortable in their outfits, it will show in the photos. Opt for clothing that fits well and allows for movement, especially for those active toddlers and young kids who will be busy during the shoot. Soft fabrics, well-fitting shoes, and breathable materials can make a big difference in everyone’s mood and ease.
Tip: Have a quick trial run of the outfits before the day of the shoot to ensure everyone is comfortable and that everything fits well.
